Location: Cohen Children's Medical Center, New Hyde Park, NY
What was once an interior courtyard, the newly enclosed Atrium of the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York had been left unfinished. TWINE was hired to recommend schemes for providing a relaxed yet spirited landscape within. We worked closely with our client to develop programming requirements for services to be located in this very public and prominent space. The Atrium, directly adjacent to the main entrance and lobby of the Hospital, is often used for public performances and special events.
The serpentine path cutting through the atrium space, allowed TWINE to incorporate and separately define the required planning elements; a surgical (family) waiting, a resource center, a gift shop and food service kiosk and a children’s educational play space. A water feature was incorporated into the winding planter wall to help provide privacy, both acoustically and visually, in the resource center and family waiting areas. The three dimensional aspects of the Atrium, by extending up four stories, has allowed installation of a sculptural light feature and suspended fabric panels as part of this installation, adding interest from even the highest floors.
